Don’t Leave Men Behind

Don’t get me wrong. I firmly support women and women’s rights. Most millennials and above, including me, were raised with so many patriarchal values and unconscious gender biases. Without a doubt, there needs to be more women in positions of power, and I will do everything I can to help make this happen.

However when I give talks in women’s conferences around the world, I make a point to remind my fellow sisters to be compassionate and understanding toward men who fear women moving up the corporate ladder.

According to CNBC, women make up over 50 % of payroll jobs in the U.S. which shows that women benefit more than men in today’s tight labor market. So of course men are scared: it doesn’t take much to see that the more women in places of power, the less room there will be for them.

So instead of punishing men for acting out of fear, help make them move beyond the old, hierarchical way of thinking. Help them understand this scarcity-model thinking comes from identifying with your head. It is fear-based because your head can only make decisions based upon what it knows. What it can’t compute are the hundreds of millions of possibilities that lie beyond its reach.

We are living in times of transition. The old ways aren’t gone yet, the new ones have yet to arrive. There will be more women in power than men, however they need to wield their power gently and compassionately. Compassion is cornerstone strengths of hashtag #feminineleadership. It’s not at all a “it was men in power, now it will be us because we do it better” attitude. It is a shift of consciousness that changes your attitude and allows you to trust the changes that are happening all around us, rather than fearing them. And when you do that, you’ll see that both men and women are perfectly aligned to help.
